Family Therapy

How often have families been perceived  internally and externally as being happy  and normal until a family member brings the shutters down by rocking the boat  and exposing the reality of dysfunction within the  Family Unit.  This identified person although labeled the Scapegoat of the family, holds the key to turning family Denial on its face and   exposing the Reality that  relational  and other issues exist within the family unit.  Unfortunately the power of the family unit 's  belief patterns /dynamics can over ride the denial and the scapegoat is seen with tunnel vision as the  sole problem.  For this reason, family members may decide not to be involved in Family Therapy and an opportunity  for healing   of  each member  and the Family Unit as a Whole is lost. So..

What is Family therapy ?  Family Therapy involves addressing issues that interfere with the healthy functioning of a family unit. The issue/s presented have a ripple effect on each member of the family, negatively impacting on their mental, emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing with the result the family unit falling apart if not addressed. Therapy looks into the relational dynamics of the family. There is an opportunity for each member to have a voice to share and explore their thoughts, emotions, opinions and express their needs. This opens space for greater insight, understanding and respect for each individual family member’s experiences and perceptions, and how this information can be transformed into positive respectful change for the family as a Whole.

My  role as a Family therapist is one of Facilitator

  •  Educating with Skills to employ effective communication
  •  Establishing Healthy Boundaries
  •  Exploring family strengths and
  •  Equipping with skills and strategies to help work through challenges to bring about healthy family identity and a sense of Well Being to each member.
  • Individual counselling is also encouraged as part of Therapy.

  • Denial
  •  Domestic Violence

Grief and Loss Therapy

What is Grief and how does it manifest ?

Grief is the pain of Loss – It manifests in ways that affect Body Mind and Spirit.  Grief is generally in response to loss through death, however it is also a normal human response to other losses of change

• Post natal relinquishment, Divorce, relationships, loss of identity, loss of childhood, loss of dreams, health, job, finances and many other losses that affect people's lives

The pain associated with  the death of a loved one at times is indescribable.  The  absence of a loved one's presence creates a yearning and longing  hurt  that runs deep, leaving an emptiness  and aloneness  of inconsolable heartache.

Combined with this heartache , comes

the  conflicting emotional whirlwind of

• Shame, Guilt, feeling out of control, Panic, Anxiety, Shock, Disbelief, Sadness, Hopelessness, Confusion, Anger and Remorse, just to name a few all  of which can   be experienced with  loss  of change.

This description wouldn't be complete without mentioning the  emotional impact  of Grief on people of all ages when losing a  much loved family Pet.

Grief is very personal and as such each individual expresses grief in different ways, however

irrespective of what the Loss is, Grief needs to be  acknowledged and validated

Recovery involves walking through the emotional turmoil in order to move forward. This takes courage,

however with the help of Grief and Loss Therapy this is possible…

You don’t have to walk this path alone.

At A Helping Hand Counselling, I am here to listen with empathy and compassion, walk at your pace and take you through a process to gain a sense of control, empowerment and well- being.

Your Journey to Recovery!.
